Scar Revision Options
For some scars, a single technique may provide significant improvement, but we often recommend a combination of techniques for best results. We’ll always favor the least invasive option possible, given your scar and the level of improvement you hope to see.
Topical Treatment
Topical treatments, such as gels or tapes, can help in wound closure and healing, or to reduce the ability of skin to produce irregular pigment. These products may be used to treat newer surface scars and discoloration, as well as to aid in healing of surgical scar revision.
Injectable Fillers
Injectable fillers may be used to fill depressed or concave scars. While the effects are temporary (lasting 3 month to a few years), and must be repeated to maintain results, it can be a great method for the right scar.
Surface Treatments
Surface treatments such as dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing with profractional work by removing layers of skin to soften surface irregularities and reduce uneven pigmentation.
Surgical Scar Revision
For deeper or more problematic scars, surgical scar revision may be needed. In this case, your doctor will surgically remove the old scar and use great care in closing the wound to create a better scar. The technique’s success also depends upon your following strict post operative rules for scar care to ensure the scar heals more attractively.
Recovery from Scar RevisionRecovery time will vary greatly between the different techniques; if a non-surgical method is recommended you can expect little to no downtime. For a surgical revision, recovery time will depend on the size and location of the scar. If it is in an area that is easily affected by normal movements, we’ll counsel you on how long you’ll have to avoid activity.
