Liposuction for Men
Spot-reduction is possible with liposuction
You’ve heard that spot-reduction is a myth. It is a fact that we are genetically programmed to store fat in specific areas of the body—for men this typically means the belly, chest, back or chin, not to mention those dreaded love-handles. This fat is challenging to lose, even with the most disciplined training regime and diet plan. However, liposuction can often achieve what a healthy lifestyle cannot.
If stubborn fat is preventing you from reaching your fitness goals, liposuction can help you get a leaner, more toned look that diet and exercise alone may not achieve. By selectively reducing stubborn bulges, your plastic surgeon can help you lose unwanted fat while simultaneously sculpting a naturally smoother, leaner body contour. Results are apparent within days and will last for years.
Will liposuction work for me?
Liposuction for men can produce satisfying results for many different body types, but you will likely experience more optimal improvements if you meet the following criteria:
- You are at a healthy, stable body weight. Liposuction can reduce fat deposits for a better shape, but it is not a weight loss procedure. Get close to your goal weight several months prior to surgery.
- You want to target specific fat deposits. Liposuction is an excellent procedure to spot-reduce fat in certain areas.
- You have good skin elasticity. This is key with liposuction—your skin needs to contract smoothly to the new, slimmer body contour. Liposuction will not improve sagging skin; consider a body lifting procedure for this issue.
- You don’t smoke. Smoking increases surgery and anesthesia risks and hinders your ability to heal, jeopardizing results. Quit smoking at least 1 month prior to surgery.
Swan Center is a wonderful establishment. The people that work there are warm and welcoming. They do wonderful work and always make you feel comfortable in the procedures you are getting. If you are going to spend money to look good, you should be confident in where you are going.

Liposuction Options for Men in Alpharetta
Our three board certified plastic surgeons here at The Swan Center in Alpharetta are trained and experienced in multiple liposuction technologies as well as techniques that achieve a natural, masculine appearance. Both procedures produce safe, predictable and natural looking results; however, in special situations, the ultrasonic technique may offer better results.
Using a “micro-cannula,” a specialized tube-like instrument, excess fat is selectively removed, achieving a smoother, leaner body contour. The incisions used are very small—typically less than a half-inch in length—and are placed inconspicuously in the natural body contours. After healing, scars are barely perceptible.
Tumescent Liposuction
During tumescent liposuction, the surgeon injects sterile solution into the areas of the body where fat is to be removed. The fluid helps separate the fat from the surrounding tissues, which allows the micro cannula to remove the fat more easily. This type of liposuction is most typically used on the face and neck, arms, and calves and ankles.
Ultrasonic Liposuction
Ultrasonic liposuction uses a specialized micro-cannula that produces ultrasonic energy. The ultrasound energy “melts” the fat, which is then removed through traditional liposuction. This technique is usually used for very fibrous areas such as the upper back, body contouring, and for male breast reduction (gynecomastia).
Liposuction recovery basics
The majority of liposuction patients get more or less back to normal within a week or so following surgery. This depends, of course, on the extent and location of surgery as well as your individual healing process. Pain is typically minimal; liposuction tends to produce more soreness similar to a tough session at the gym. You will be given a compression garment to help keep the area supported and minimize post-operative swelling. Exercise can be resumed within 2 or 3 weeks for most patients.
